Both the Lines and Hasluck biographies of Georgiana Molloy state that Mary Smith died after drinking a bottle of brandy, and blows from her husband contributed to her death. Witnesses said that Smith regularly mistreated his wife. An inquest determined the official cause of death as apoplexy, and no charges were filed against Andrew Smith.
