Notes for Thomas Henry CROSBY

The 1900 Census lists Thomas H. CROSBY born May 1856, Mary (2nd wife) born about Jan 1851, son William born March 1881 and son Elmer born Oct 1885. Thomas stated he had been in U.S. since 1882, Mary since 1888, son William since 1882 and stated Elmer was born in PA. His stated occupation is coal miner.

The history of Renton in its early years was heavily influenced by coal mining. Coal was discovered in the area about 1870. The Renton Mine operated from 1873-1920. Other nearby coal mining areas around Renton, WA were Black Diamond, Franklin, and Newcastle.

Thomas: The certified copy of the Death Certificate does not list an informant. It is stated that he is married, although there is no spousal name given. Thomas' father's name is also not listed, only a birthplace of England. His mother's maiden name is listed as Margaret Sutton, born England. In the 1892 (1887?) census of Washington Territory, a female, first inital M, age 56, born England, is living in the same household. Possibly this was Thomas' mother.
Same census also lists a 19 year old female named Margeret. (1892-19=1873 or 1887-19=1869) Possibly a cousin, younger sister, or wife?
